    • A Singapore tourist visa depends on the passport. ICA lists 34 countries, plus special travel documents, whose holders must apply first.
    • Every visitor needs a passport valid for six months, onward travel, enough cash and an SG Arrival Card submitted within three days before arrival.
    • A visa is not an immigration pass: officers decide entry at the border, and the e-Pass emailed afterwards sets the length of stay.

    The passport decides whether a visitor needs a Singapore tourist visa. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) publishes the list of passports that need one, as at October 2026. Those visitors apply before they travel. Three separate things decide a short visit: the visa, the entry conditions every visitor meets, and the pass that sets the stay.

    Say it is the night before the flight to Changi. The bag is packed, and the passport lies open on the kitchen table with five months left on it. Whatever the answer to the visa question, ICA asks for a passport valid for at least six months, and five does not meet it. The visa question gets its answer from a list. The six-month test gets its answer from the date on the page.

    What follows covers the general rules for short visits, with the nationality pages linked where they apply.

    Do you need a tourist visa for Singapore?

    The answer sits in the passport and in one list published by ICA.

    That list names 34 countries. It also names refugee travel documents and alien’s passports, both subject to an assessment of recognition. Five further documents complete it:

    • a Palestinian Authority passport;
    • a United Arab Emirates temporary passport;
    • a Hong Kong SAR Document of Identity;
    • a Macao SAR Travel Permit;
    • a PRC Travel Document.

    Holders of any of these must apply for a visa before they travel. ICA publishes no separate list of exemptions, so a passport that does not appear on this list is not visa-required under ICA’s rules.

    Visitors carrying a US passport are covered on a page of their own. Visitors carrying an Australian passport are covered on another.

    A visa is permission to travel, not permission to enter. Section 9C of the Immigration Act 1959 states that a visa in effect confers no right to enter Singapore. Its holder must arrive through an authorised point of entry. ICA officers decide at the point of entry whether to grant a pass, and a valid visa does not guarantee entry.

    How do you apply for a Singapore tourist visa?

    No immigration counter takes a visa application. ICA does not accept them there, so the application is made before the flight.

    The route depends on whether the visitor has a local contact with a Singpass or Corppass account. A visitor without one applies through an authorised visa agent appointed by a Singapore Overseas Mission, or at the nearest Overseas Mission.

    ICA refers applicants to the nearest Overseas Mission for the detailed procedure.

    What do tourists need to enter Singapore?

    These requirements apply at the counter to every visitor, visa or not, and the passport heads the list.

    Each traveller, of any age, needs an individually issued passport or travel document, and collective documents are not accepted. Every traveller except a Singapore passport holder needs a passport valid for at least six months.

    Travellers present biometrics at clearance, for example fingerprints, facial and iris images. Failure to comply can mean denied entry. Short-term visitors should also hold sufficient cash and proof of onward travel, such as tickets or visas. ICA gives no amount for the cash.

    The SG Arrival Card is free. It is submitted through the SGAC e-service or the MyICA app within three days before arrival, counting the day of arrival. Travellers who fail to submit it can be denied entry.

    A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of any traveller who was in a risk country in the six days before arrival. It is also required after more than 12 hours in airport transit there. Travellers who cannot meet the public health requirements and refuse quarantine can be turned away from Singapore.

    How long can a tourist stay in Singapore?

    The answer to this question arrives by email, after clearance.

    From 11 March 2022, foreign visitors receive an electronic Visit Pass, the e-Pass, by email instead of a passport stamp. It states the period of stay granted and the last day of stay allowed. The e-Pass is sent to the address given on the SG Arrival Card, so that address must be valid.

    The length of the stay is set by the officer at the border. It is not tied to the validity of a visa. A visitor who cannot find the email can retrieve the pass on ICA’s e-Pass Enquiry Portal after arrival.

    A short-term visit pass carries a condition. The holder cannot take any employment, paid or unpaid, or run a business or practise a profession. A valid work pass, or work pass exempt activities, is the only exception.

    Can you extend a visit pass in Singapore, and what happens if you overstay?

    The e-Pass carries a last day, and the window to extend it opens 14 days before that date.

    Extension applications are made online only, and walk-ins are not accepted. ICA assesses each application, including the circumstances behind the request, and decides the period of extension. A local sponsor is needed in some cases, including where the applicant has immediate family who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents. The sponsor must be a Singapore citizen or permanent resident aged 21 or over with a Singpass account.

    Overstaying is a punishable offence, and the pass validity, not the visa validity, sets the permitted stay. Section 15 of the Immigration Act 1959 sets the maximum penalties as at October 2026. Remaining in Singapore after a pass has expired, without reasonable cause, is an offence. For up to 90 days, the penalty is a fine of up to SGD 4,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both. Beyond 90 days, the penalty is imprisonment of up to six months and caning of at least three strokes. Where caning does not apply, the fine is up to SGD 6,000.

    Do transit passengers need a Singapore visa?

    A stay under the Visa-Free Transit Facility ends at 96 hours, which is four days.

    Transit travellers pass through Singapore to another country without seeking immigration clearance. The facility lets eligible travellers stay without a visa. It is open to named nationalities on set conditions, and the rules for transiting through Singapore airport cover them. Extension is strictly not allowed, and entry requirements still apply, as judged by ICA officers at the point of entry.

    A traveller who does seek immigration clearance meets the entry requirements, starting with the six months on the passport, and submits the SG Arrival Card.

    Frequently asked questions about Singapore tourist visas

    Do I need a visa to visit Singapore as a tourist?

    A Singapore tourist visa is required of holders of the passports and travel documents on the ICA visa list, as at October 2026. The list names 34 countries, refugee travel documents, alien’s passports and five special documents. Those visitors must apply before travel. A visa is not an immigration pass, and ICA officers decide at the border whether to grant entry. Every visitor, visa or not, must also meet the entry requirements.

    How do I apply for a Singapore tourist visa?

    A Singapore tourist visa application is made before travel. ICA does not accept applications at immigration counters. The route depends on whether the visitor has a local contact with a Singpass or Corppass account. ICA refers applicants to the nearest Overseas Mission for the detailed procedure.

    How long can a tourist stay in Singapore?

    The length of a tourist’s stay in Singapore is set by the ICA officer at the border and shown on the e-Pass. ICA emails the e-Pass to the address given on the SG Arrival Card. It states the period of stay granted and the last day of stay allowed. The stay is not tied to the validity of any visa. Overstaying is a punishable offence.

    Can you extend a tourist visa in Singapore?

    A Singapore visit pass can be extended online when 14 days or less remain on it, as at October 2026. The extension is of the pass, not of the visa, and the pass sets the stay. Walk-in applications are not accepted. ICA assesses each case, and the extension period is its decision. A local sponsor aged 21 or over with a Singpass account is needed in some cases.

    Do you need a visa to transit through Singapore?

    Eligible travellers can transit through Singapore for up to 96 hours without a visa under the Visa-Free Transit Facility, as at October 2026. A transit traveller passes through Singapore to another country without seeking immigration clearance. The facility is open to named nationalities on set conditions, and extension is strictly not allowed. A traveller who does seek immigration clearance meets the entry requirements.
